Turquoise Sunday

Is it Turquoise Sunday already again? Okay, I made up Turquoise Sunday, and I'm not really sure how long I can post new turquoise things. But, anyway, I thought of this quilt. I know that it came from my maternal great grandmother. I love it and have always planned to restore it. I have a perfect piece of brown fabric to replace all the brown squares that have disintegrated and I got the perfect 5 yards of turquoise heavy cotton for the back. But, when I unfolded it today and saw how bad a shape it is in, I realized this is probably the best it's going to get. Anyway, even if I don't fix it, I'll continue to love it to death.

If you've followed my blog, you've heard the story of the quilt that was put under the car to change the oil and it has a huge black oil stain on the back. The plan was to cut that out and reback the quilt, then replace the brown squares on the front and requilt it next to the original quilting. But, see all those half squares around the blocks? Those are all brown and they're all shredded. It's a shame, but that's what happens when there are so many quilts in a family. Some of them end up misused.

Take care, have a great Sunday, and I'll see you on the webpage. Lane

Beautiful quilt. I love the colors, especially the turquoise. Do you know when this quilt was made? My grandmother left several partial quilts from the 30's. I had 2 quilted, and have struggled with the remaining blocks as they are poorly made. The fabric is very fragile to work with. Sound like you have your work cut out for you to fix this quilt. Karen

I'm going to bet that it's from the early 50's. There are just a few fabrics that are complex, multi-colored prints That I think are from then. Most of the fabrics tho, are very 40's. Lane

Lane, love your quilt, It's a shame that it was misused, and now difficult to repair. Patricia

Let it go.......move onto a new project.....wash it and leave it, sounds like the fabric is breaking down anyway so you'll be fight a losing battle trying to remake it. If you really love it make a copy of it from scratch....you'll have fun gathering the fabrics to closely match what you have.

What a beautiful quilt. I have heard that with damaged quilts you can baste fine net over the damaged blocks, as protection and that instead of removing frayed areas, applique new fabric over them, sometimes using the backside of the fabric to tone down the color. This is exquisite and the turquoise sets off the blocks perfectly.

Maybe your blogging friends could help you duplicate this? Perhaps you could send out pieces of one or two constants from the blocks, and then let us make you replacements?
