Boy Scout Dinner

I don't ever remember having scout dinners as a boy scout. But, my Mom surely made many of them. They're simple and I think they're healthy. Well, not to sure about cooking on aluminum foil, but I don't do it often, so it will have to be okay.

First, take a big piece of foil.

Add sliced potatoes.

Sliced cabbage.

Sliced onion, salt and pepper.

Add a ground beef patty seasoned with salt and pepper and Worcestershire sauce.

Seal it up and cut a vent in the top.

Bake it in the oven or cook on the grill at 350* for 40-45 minutes.

They're great, unless you don't like cabbage. I mean get real. How can you not like cabbage. We're going through green vegetables fast and I can't find one she really likes except green beans. So, I feed her lots of Broccoli because I like it. And, she makes this same face when I make her eat it. It's a win-win for me.

Jeez. She's so twelve-and-a-half. You can't see it here, but she's graduated to colored nail polish on her fingers (she's always been able to pick any color for her toes). Nothing wild, but more grown up than little girl pink. Hopefully, she'll learn to "color within the lines" this summer. Take care and have a great Tuesday. Lane

Lane, I do believe this is what's for dinner here tonight...I'll whip these out and toss them on the grill!!! Sounds great and right up my husbands alley!!! Thanks for the great idea....and my daughter does not like much green veggies either....you'd have thought when she was Sydney's age, I was trying to poison her!!!

Have a great day my friend!!!

We eat these meals when we are camping. We vary the contents. Sometimes, steak, onions, potatoes and carrots. We double wrap in foil and toss into the coals. Be sure to add a little vegetable oil if it is going into the fire! Lane, my boys wouldn't eat vegetables growing up at all. Their idea of veggies were french fries! Now they are adults and are salad eaters and all kinds of veggies. WHAT!!!!!!

I have done burger that way but without the cabbage, never thought of it. We love cabbage too. I shall try that one this week, sounds good. Thanks Lane.

Your dinner looks good, will have to try that, I have done just the potatoes and onions in foil.
When my children were young they only liked corn---however, they had to "try" every vegetable I cooked, even if it was one pea. Now that they are in their 40's---WHAT--- my kids can't be that old, anyway, they all love every kind of veggie. So keep your chin up, in 27 years or so, Sydney will be eating all kinds of veggies.
Hope you are having a great day.

That looks like a very fast, easy meal that Ron would love. I need to try it. Son Kevin ate a very limited # of things as a child. Now he's living in Singapore eating all sorts of ethnic foods, including sushi. Because we always had a vege garden, the rest of our kids always ate veges.

We have also had these packages when camping, Not big on cabbage, so we have never added it.

I have been lucky as far as vegetables and my family goes - we are all big veggie eaters. The Baby is a vegetarian, so we often eat meals with no meat.

We always put carrots in ours too. We've also done it as a casserole (in a 9" x 9" pan). Green beans totally work in there (and sometimes corn too), spread cream of mushroom soup over the ground beef and then add grated cheddar cheese on top. I haven't done that for dinner in a while, so maybe we'll have this soon. Thanks for the yummy reminder :D.

Looks great!

Thanks for sharing this, and for including a pictorial. We're going to make this tonight with a slight modification: I'm going to make a meatloaf with the beef patty.

One thing to add:

Be sure to slice your potatoes THIN! We cooked the pouch in the oven for 50 minutes and they didnt cook, granted I only sliced a potato into 1/2-1/4 inch cuts.

Next time I'm going to make this in a crockpot I think, with a taco salad shell-like base of foil to hold everything together.

Cabbage tasted great! Really took on the flavor of the meat.
