Capital of Texas Quiltfest

So, you all know that we videotape everything, and still not enough things.  Sometimes, you don't know that something is worth taping until it's too late to get the camera out.  Those times are for memories.  But, Saturday was for befuddlement.  But, I have this video of the show to remember it by.  And, all the pictures I took, which I'm hoping to get through this weekend.

At about four and a half minutes in, you'll see Sydney leading me to my Christmas Tree quilt with my eyes close.  And, just after that, we go to the First Inspired quilt.

The rest is us walking around the rest of the show and a couple of times, Rob sneaking over to one of my quilts and interviewing people.

Right after I see the Christmas Tree quilt, you'll see our dear friend LD with her walker and then a lady walks up and tells us that she won two years ago.  That lady is the co-owner of the shop I teach at.  I think she also entered for the first quilt she'd ever put in a show.

Okay, so have fun.  While it's fun to see the other quilts, it is a relatively long video at 30 minutes, but if you just wanna see us, we don't take up too much of that.

Be well.  Lane

Oh my, I had tears in my eyes watching, such happy, emotional moments ( and filmed so well kudos to Rob). I remember the rough patches you posted about getting that Xmas quilt done to your satisfaction. A fitting reward for all your efforts. You are such an inspiration to me in my machine quilting efforts.

I feel like a stalker.

I stumbled on your blog a couple of weeks ago and was intrigued that you're a man who quilts! I have never read anyone's blog before this, but I wanted to know everything and started reading from the beginning. I have purposely avoided the current posts, because that would have been like reading the end of the book first. But today, I wanted to introduce myself so here I am. I was so pleased to see this video. Congratulations!

I took up quilting in May of 2009, quite by accident. My elderly Aunt came to live with us and I needed something to occupy my time. I've never been a sit & watch tv kind of person, but when you're caring for someone with Parkinson's & related dementia, you're kind of stuck. I searched the internet for a project and found myself at Block Central. I dug deep into one of my closets and pulled out some fabric that had been in there for about 10 years, grabbed the kitchen shears and started cutting the shapes for "Somewhere in Time" bom. Then I started hand piecing the first block. I was amazed and quite pleased with myself when I actually completed that first block. Eventually, I hand pieced all of them. I did go out and buy a pair fabric shears before cutting out the 2nd block. It took me more that 3 years to complete the hand quilting, but I finished it in time to give my husband for our 34th wedding anniversary. I named it "Forever". I love the hand stitching projects just as much as the machine stitching projects.

Since then I've only made 4 more quilts and 2 of them were baby quilts. I don't have as much time to devote to quilting as I would like with working full time and care giving to my Aunt. And it's only been the last few months that I've been comfortable enough to call myself a quilter. And then I usually downgrade that title to "beginner".

I need you to know that in the short time that I've been reading your blog (I'm only through 6/2010) I have learned a lot from you. You have inspired me to do things out of my comfort zone as well. I've learned that for hand quilting, cotton batting was not my best choice, especially for my very first project. But I've always loved the texture of a cotton bat quilt when the fabric shrinks and kind of squishes up and ripples between the stitches. Monday night I took a stab at free motion quilting and last night I opened up my grandmother's old Singer treadle machine. From what I have been able to research on line, she is an old "Red Eye" probably from the late 1910's to early 1920's. Unfortunately, she's not working. But I'm determined to get her going and un-cease her. I've never done applique, but fell in love with the Christmas quilt you made Rob in 2009. Is that pattern available for purchase anywhere? You've helped to give me the confidence to know that I can try just about anything as long as I have a sharp seam ripper handy and I have learned from you that there is no shame to starting again.

Thank you for sharing your life, your experiences, knowledge and skills with me.

Keep up the beautiful work and congratulations again.

A devoted stalker, Cheryl.

I watched the whole video. Thank you for taking me to the show. So many beautiful quilts. Do you happen to know how many were on show? Fantastic moments with you and your family around your quilts. Congratulations once again. Of the other quilts, two grabbed my attention the most. The one that I thought was in the style of a Native American pattern (at 21.03) and the purple one that Sydney was photographing. My daughter would love that one too. Purple is her favourite colour. xx
