V intage Thingies Thursday; from me, to me

Welcome to VTT sponsored by my friend Suzanne at Coloradolady. Today, I'm featuring a gift I gave myself.

Just before Cmas, my family and I went to one of our favorite gift shops. We loaded up on gifts for everyone and picked out things for ourselves. One of the things I picked for myself was this Roseville vase. After we all went through together, we split up and shopped for one another (believe me, this is so much easier than trying to guess what a teenage girl or a gay man would like). One of the things I had picked out was this Roseville vase. Neither of my family members gave it a second glance, which almost assured that I'd find it in my stocking (you have to look totally disinterested in the item you're actually going to give to the recipient you're shopping with to keep the mystery). But after I finished my shopping, the vase was still there. I don't remember what the price was, but it was clear the seller didn't know what they had. So, I picked it up and when it was my turn to checkout (you have to check out when none of the recipients is is watching) I paid for it. Then, I wrapped it in my paper (we each select a paper every year and everyone wraps that person's gifts in that paper. previous year's papers are used for other groups. makes the gifts very easy to separate and no nametags) and put it under the tree.

Christmas morning, I unwrapped it and we all admired it and Sydney looked at Rob and Rob looked at Sydney and I looked at them both and asked who it was from?
Welll, uhhhh....I remember seeing it...I know where it came from...I don't remember buying you that...neither do I...
And, then I confessed.
Have a wonderful VTT. Now jump on over to Suzanne's blog and check out all the other vintage stuff folks are posting this week. Lane

I love how you describe the nonchalance of Christmas gift shopping. Mr. P occasionally surprises me. ( Ok Twice in all the years we've been together)

At least the way you do it it's still somewhat of a surprise!

I'm glad you bought yourself a gift you really wanted.

Merry Christmas to You! A wonderful example of Roseville and a wonderful way to receive it as a gift....even from yourself! Neat story and gift exchange idea!

Love the vase and the story. It occurs to me that it would also look good sitting in front of your first quilt (the pink low contrast one) filled with bright pink tulips. The dark greens and creams and brighter pink would really work well with it.

Oh, Lane this was such a fun post...and believe me when I say, I know all about this...I so often hint, and hint, and well...NOT SO MUCH HINT....on what I want....and guess what....don't get it....EVER! This year for a gift giving occasion, I very specifically said I wanted a Tom's cracker jar...(vintage)...said this more than a few times, family members even said something about it....guess what....I got a new computer....(granted, I love it)(and I am most grateful to say the least) But I could have had a whole counter of cracker jars for what this computer cost!!! I love how you got this for yourself...wrapped it....I have laughed so much over this....Oh I wish I was in Austin...we'd have a grand time...I am sure of it!!!! Have a great VTT Friend!!!!!

Thanks for the backstory. However it's the end of the day as I am reading this and I'm not sure I understand how you pick out each others' gifts...no don't explain again, as long as Xmas day is happy it's fine.

Sneaky, but smart! Good eye for a bargain.

Great vase, beautiful quilt and wonderful story. There are three of us in our family also and one is a teenage girl. I have an easy time shopping for her though - she loves everything. We have a tradition that started about 5 years ago. We draw names and then take $5.00 to the Dollar Tree (Everything is a Dollar - I am sure you have one). Then we sneak up and down the isle trying to find just the right things for each other. A couple days later we open the gifts and let each other know who their Secret Elf was. This all happens before Christmas and is just something silly we do - I am always amazed at how thoughtfull the gifts are. When you only have $5.00 you really have to think about the person you are buying for. Of course Christmas Day is full of many presents, but Secret Elf day is always a favorite! Thanks for sharing your story!.

That is a very pretty vase and great story behind it. That is one way to get what you want, buy it yourself. I love the quilt as I am a freak over them.
